Hamburger Chow Mein

Total Time: 50 mins Preparation Time: 15 mins Cook Time: 35 mins

Ingredients

  • Servings: 4
  • 1 lb hamburger
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 dash pepper (to taste)
  • 2 cups celery, diced
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 2 (14 ounce) cans bean sprouts, drained
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon beef gravy or 1 tablespoon molasses

Recipe

  • 1 saute meat and onion in a small amount of butter or vegetable oil until meat is brown and no longer pink.
  • 2 add salt, pepper, celery and water; cover and simmer for 20 minutes. add bean sprouts.
  • 3 blend cornstarch with 2 tablespoons water and add soy sauce, sugar and brown gravy sauce.
  • 4 stir into meat mixture and heat until thickened.
  • 5 serve over chow mein noodles.
  • 6 variation: omit hamburger and use leftover lamb roast cut into bite size pieces along with leftover gravy. canned sliced water chestnuts and/or a can of baby corn is a lovely addition as well.
  • 7 note: this may also be served over linguine instead of chow mein noodles as in lo mein.
