Hamburger Chow Mein

Ingredients
- Servings: 4
- 1 lb hamburger
- 1 medium onion, diced
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 1 dash pepper (to taste)
- 2 cups celery, diced
- 1 1/2 cups water
- 2 (14 ounce) cans bean sprouts, drained
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 2 tablespoons water
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 tablespoon beef gravy or 1 tablespoon molasses
Recipe
- 1 saute meat and onion in a small amount of butter or vegetable oil until meat is brown and no longer pink.
- 2 add salt, pepper, celery and water; cover and simmer for 20 minutes. add bean sprouts.
- 3 blend cornstarch with 2 tablespoons water and add soy sauce, sugar and brown gravy sauce.
- 4 stir into meat mixture and heat until thickened.
- 5 serve over chow mein noodles.
- 6 variation: omit hamburger and use leftover lamb roast cut into bite size pieces along with leftover gravy. canned sliced water chestnuts and/or a can of baby corn is a lovely addition as well.
- 7 note: this may also be served over linguine instead of chow mein noodles as in lo mein.
